Spinal Vascular Anatomy Research

Description

The images below are from two studies that evaluated spinal vascular anatomy in vivo from a clinical perspective. First, the precise intraforaminal location of thoracolumbar anterior radiculomedullary arteries was evaluated using multi-planar analysis of the border of the neural foramen (entrance to the spinal cord of the vertebral column). These arteries, which feed the spinal cord, are endangered during some pain procedures. Inadvertent injection or injury of the spinal arteries can lead to severe complications. An additional study discusses the anatomy and visualization of transmedullary venous anastomoses with flat-panel catheter angiotomography. Transmedullary venous anastomoses are normal venous structures that must be differentiated from spinal cord anomalies such as vascular malformations.
